How is it possible?
The Kansas City Chiefs just beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime with a Mecole Hardman touchdown. I act as unbiased as I can on here and try not to show what football team I root for, until right now. How is it possible for this amount of heartbreak to hit my 49ers? They are the most tortured fanbase in North American sports over the last 15 year by a mile. Don't believe me? I'll fucking list every time where they were on the cusp of winning the super bowl.
2012 NFC championship game against Giants; lost in overtime with TWO muffed punts. 2013 Super Bowl; had 1st and goal at the 5 yard line down 5 points to the Ravens with under 2 minutes to go....1 run and 3 straight incompletions. 2014 NFC championship at Seattle; down 6 in the redzone with 30 seconds left, throw to the endzone for the win and picked off. 2020 super bowl; up 10 in the fourth quarter with the ball, gave up 2 Chief td's and then Jimmy overthrows a potential winning TD with a minute to go. 2022 NFC Championship game against the Rams; up 10 in the 4th quarter AGAIN and they blew it partly in thanks to maybe the worst dropped INT in the 4th. 2023 NFC championship at Philly; maybe the only one of here that doesn't completely haunt me since the game was over in the first quarter after we lost literally every QB on our roster. Find me any other team in this era that has come that close that many times to winning it.
Then to now, 2024 Super Bowl against the Chiefs again; winning in the game 90% of the time just needing one stop in the 4th quarter or OT. Couldn't get either of them and that's your ballgame. The 49ers did have a lot of chances to put the game away but i'm not going to just shit on our offense because the reality is KC has a great defense and we were moving the ball most of the 1st half and in the 4th quarter/OT. Didn't finish a couple drives but neither did KC. It was just a high quality game that wound up coming down to a Patrick Mahomes game winning drive, which he delivered as always. I'm not going to say Kyle blew it because the 49ers in crunch time moved the ball on a top tier defense for a touchdown and two field goals and he did have some ballsy plays work. Brock Purdy played pretty good, he didn't have to much time to throw with Spags throwing pressure but he didn't make any mistakes and threw some dimes. He had a couple that he overthrew but he was ready for the moment and he is not why we lost. CMC had a fumble on the first drive which CANNOT happen but made up for it as he so often does. Trent Williams had back to back penalties in the first half but settled in. The interior O Line had a tall task and KC had their way, especially in that 3rd quarter where SF only could muster up a few yards. Now to the defense, who just as they did 4 years ago shut down Mahomes for 3 quarters. Then Mahomes activated his super powers and engineered a 2 game tying field goal drives at the end of regulation and the game winning TD drive in OT. He's fucking incredible.
In the end we lost to the best player and the current day Patriots. Does it make it hurt less? No, not really since we had them on the ropes again and couldn't get it done. As a Niner fan it is just so tough to go into another season where we will probably be good but how am I supposed to celebrate games early in the year when this seems to be the only possible result. Even during tonights game I really never fully celebrated anything because I knew there was so much work to do since I have seen the fuck shit that has happened before. When you get so close so many times, up 10 fucking points in back to back super bowls and lose both of them, when the hell are we supposed to get our hopes up? My final takeaway's from this game/season. That was the most brutal loss I have ever experienced in sports thus far. I feel confident about Brock Purdy being the QB to get us over the hump if we aren't playing Mahomes (Not a soul out there from any fanbase would feel good about playing Pat). It's going to be hard to get back but if this team has shown us anything it's that they are very capable of getting here, now next year you just have to stay healthy enough and finish the job in New Orleans to break the 30 year drought. I love this team and let's get it done next year! See you in August for the next journey.
